An Impulsive Now
“My problem is I'm always now. I not thinking of the future. And because I'm only thinking of now, that's why I go and take a hit of the joint." -Kanaka from Halawa Prison
What you really mean is that you're only thinking of the near future — the next second, minute, or hour that you'll get loaded. Addiction forgoes all worry about the far future in lieu of the near future, but it's still caught in the web of time. Addiction doesn't care about what happens tomorrow, it only cares about what happens next. If your "now" really means "what's next," it isn't really now, is it?
What "next" are you hungry to take a hit of? Is it the next episode on Netflix, the next bite of pizza, the next post on TikTok, the next hour when you get off of work, or the next sentence when you finally get to talk?
